About Us
Smith Walbridge has been a cornerstone of the marching arts for generations, proudly supporting music educators, performers, and enthusiasts across the nation. Our journey began in 1949 when Merl and Margaret Smith pioneered the first-ever marching arts camp in Syracuse, Indiana. What started as a vision to elevate training and leadership quickly became the gold standard for drum majors, color guard, and cheerleaders alike.
In 1976, their son, Gary Smith—then Director of the renowned University of Illinois Marching Illini—continued the family’s spirit of innovation by launching G & S Products. From developing the first velcro spats to revolutionizing marching retail, Gary’s passion fueled the company’s growth. Partnering with his brother-in-law, Tom Herald, he expanded operations, eventually leading to Director’s Showcase, a brand synonymous with quality in the marching community.
The Smith legacy didn’t stop there. In 1987, Gary took over Smith Walbridge Camp, transforming it into Smith Walbridge Clinics, a premier training ground for marching excellence. Under his leadership and later that of Barry Houser, the clinics became a vital resource for students and directors nationwide.
In 1997, Gary extended the family’s commitment to marching excellence with Smith Walbridge Band Products, dedicated to equipping bands with top-tier gear and expertise. In 2008, his son, Sean Smith—deeply rooted in both the family business and the marching world as a University of Illinois Marching Illini member—stepped in to lead the company into the future. Alongside his wife, Mercedes, Sean has expanded Smith Walbridge Band Products nationwide while preserving the personalized, customer-focused service that defines our heritage.
For over 75 years, Smith Walbridge has set the standard in marching arts excellence. Whether you need industry-leading equipment, expert guidance, or unwavering support for your program, we’re here to help you perform at your very best—just as we’ve done since 1949.
