How to Attach a Color Guard Flag

For flags with sewn-in tabs (instead of Velcro or ties), using electrical tape is a simple and secure method that many performers rely on.

If you’re new to color guard or just learning how to attach a flag to a pole, don’t worry—it's easier than it looks! For flags with sewn-in tabs (instead of Velcro or ties), using electrical tape is a simple and secure method that many performers rely on. If your flag does not have tabs, we recommend that you watch Brian Dutton's video.

What You’ll Need:

Step-by-Step Instructions (scroll down to see video and photos):

  1. Slide the Flag On:
Insert the pole through the sleeve of the flag. Position the flag and pull the sleeve  to make sure the sleeve is snug. Remove the cap if you are using the rubber caps instead of the stock plastic caps. We recommend taping over stock plastic caps

  2. Position the Tabs:
If you want hide the taping on the bottom tab, you position the top tab higher (the same length as the bottom tab length). The top tab may extend post the pole.

  3. Secure with Tape:
While holding the bottom tab in place, tightly wrap electrical tape around the pole over the tab. Use 2–3 layers to make sure it stays put. Now slide the flag sleeve down to cover the bottom tab. While holding the bottom tab area to avoid shifting, get the desired tension with the top and repeat the wrapping process. If you don't want to hide the bottom tab taping, you can just line the tabs up to the desired position on the pole, and start taping at either end.

  4. Check for Movement:
Tug lightly on the flag to make sure it doesn’t slide. If it shifts, adjust the flag accordingly and possible add additional tape.

Bonus Tip:

Electrical tape is great because it’s flexible, holds tight, and doesn’t leave a sticky mess. For extra security, especially during intense routines or outdoor conditions, some performers double-wrap each tab area.
